I have a Facebook account that I setup in 2011 and never used. I made one friend, which was my wife and then disabled the account. No posts, no photos, no likes, nothing. A few months ago I started receiving update notifications to the email account it was setup with that I've been ignoring. That was until I noticed I had received a suggestion to join a colon cancer support group a few weeks ago. To send me that came across as highly invasive and instantly had me wondering what Facebook was silently compiling and inferring about me and my family. I recovered my password and logged into my account, had a look at what details I had in there, changed my DOB wondering why I had added it (I normally enter a fake (correct year but Jan 1), who was being suggested as a friend, where it was suggesting I live, and then attempted to download the data dump that Facebook had on me before I delete the account permanently. I'm now locked out unless I upload a driver's license or passport id to prove my identity. Given that Facebook shouldn't know anything about me: no photos, no address or phone number (unless they have that from my now deleted WhatsApp account); they shouldn't be able to confirm my identity, unless they are storing information I have not given them or by inferring information via my wife. So I'm stuck. Any suggestions other than going back to ignoring Facebook?

I recovered my password and logged into my account, had a look at what details I had in there, changed my DOB wondering why I had added it (I normally enter a fake (correct year but Jan 1), who was being suggested as a friend, where it was suggesting I live, and then attempted to download the data dump that Facebook had on me before I delete the account permanently. I'm now locked out unless I upload a driver's license or passport id to prove my identity. Given that Facebook shouldn't know anything about me: no photos, no address or phone number (unless they have that from my now deleted WhatsApp account); they shouldn't be able to confirm my identity, unless they are storing information I have not given them or by inferring information via my wife. So I'm stuck. Any suggestions other than going back to ignoring Facebook?

The access should be generally available to anybody in the community, or within a large area of the community. 2. Speeds should be 1 gigabit or higher and symmetric. 3. It would be really good if consumers were allowed to run servers (web, irc, etc.) 4. Access should not be limited to regions. For example, if there are nation state firewalls, you should mention that. 5. Static IP addresses are not a requirement. Static IPv6 would be nice though. 6. Please mention price.

I've brought up one of these issues in the past with the frame "can you explain why you did it this way?" and the what I got back was a word salad. How do I work with these people? What approach should I take when I bring up these deep technical debt issues?

I have the opportunity to shadow a CEO/Founder of a $25 million dollar company. The company is in the fresh produce sector - not an industry that I ever really considered, but the founder has been able to build it up from nothing to one of Inc’s fastest growing companies in just 6 years. I have free reign to attend meetings/calls in all departments, and I have committed to 4 hours, 3 days a week. The CEO is a friend so there’s an established relationship. My longterm goal is to own my company and I want to learn how a successful business is run and the leadership skills required. I’ve never done this before, so my questions are how do I get the most out of this great opportunity? How can I add value to him? How long should I continue this internship? Any other best practices/recommendations? Thank you so much in advance!

My goal in life is to have maximum freedom: minimal obligations, minimal stress, minimal responsibilities, while maintaining a private room to live in with basic utilities and food. The pressure to regularly exhaust myself with financial obligations that I'm fundamentally not interested in makes it too difficult for me to live comfortably enough to comfortably pursue the things I actually care about, thus defeating the purpose of meeting those needs to begin with. I'm not convinced it is possible for me to combine "work" and "pleasure" in a way that pays the bills without making serious compromises. Realistically, what are the best options for coming as close to this ideal as possible?

Upshot: I don't know if mine is an isolated instance, but if you're considering or in the process of switching to Google Fi, especially if you want to use it with your iPhone, think twice. TL;DR: The ugly: - My number wasn't ported after a week of activation despite calling customer support every day, and I have strong reasons to believe no one gave a damn. - I got sub-2G speeds with their LTE in a fully-covered, densely populated area; never figured out why. - Customer support has absolutely no troubleshooting material for iOS. The bad: - Phone support wait time ranges from 40 min to 60+ min; same for online chat. The good: - You can fill out a form and they'll call you back. - Call center reps were polite and friendly (but weren't able to help me). - At least no retention BS. The full story is over 2000 characters, so I'll put it in a comment / comments.

Hi HN! So recently I applied for a software engineering role at a startup. A week and a bit ago I had an interview where they and I chatted for a bit and got to know each other a little, which I thought went swimmingly. Yesterday however, was my technical screen. I was confident but nervous beforehand, but when it started that's when my mind froze, I couldn't think at all and I was just a bumbling mess. It was by no means a difficult problem and almost immediately afterwards and when the pressure was gone the solution became obvious to me, but by then I knew it was too late to change anything. Stuff like this happens to me all the time. Not every time I'm being judged in person, but every time I'm being judged where I need to think and I _need_ to succeed and I'm not in a position of power. I just get so much anxiety and my mind completely shuts down. It has caused me to fail things I shouldn't have. Not only technical interviews, but e.g. my first driving test I just freaked out and so couldn't pass it. Examinations at school I am fine as I don't have another person in front of me judging me. The software engineering job I am currently at is a consultancy agency, but probably the only reason why I was offered it a few years ago was because I didn't have to do a technical interview. If I had, I probably would have failed that too. I couldn't sleep at all last night, the night after the interview. And the email I was dreading I received this morning. As soon as I saw the rejection I just burst out crying uncontrollably. It took me an hour to regain my composure to send a reply email thanking them for their time and wishing them success. I broke down not so much because I failed, but because of _why_ I failed. Even now, hours after the fact, I am still quite shaken. I was wondering if you or others in this community have experienced something similar, and what steps you have taken to remedy it? Thank you all so much in advance! Jess :-)

Like the title says, I am about to graduate with a non CS degree. I have some programming experience from making my own projects but nothing worth showing off. How can I use the next 8 mos. to set myself up for a job in tech?

I have 5 years exp in .net and am looking to move to NYC in the new year. I live in a considerably smaller metro area currently and am finding the scope and breadth of the market intimidating. In the past I have had the normal programming job hunt hurdles to leap; whiteboard interviews, multiple phone/in person interviews, flakey HR responses or no responses. All of that are things I feel are standard in the job hunting process I am comfortable about going through again. Currently I am finding that even looking for and settling on a place to start is overwhelming. The potential of places to work seems 100x the current market I am in (and it probably is). This leads me to think I should connect with a recruiter but that brings a whole new host of issues I am unfamiliar with, since I have never used a recruiter in the past. With that being said, I was wondering if people here had advice or experiences worth sharing with regards to job hunting and the issues that might not be as recognizable before you went through the process. Pay negotiations, setting up in person interviews, traversing a larger job market, whether or not to use a recruiter and how to find a good one. I have struggled with conversations my whole life. Even with close friends that I have shared intimate details with I often find that conversations will stalemate rather quickly and that neither of us has anything to say. Do you have ideas on how to improve conversational skills? IPFS (Interplanetary File System) is marketed as a New Internet: an HTTP replacement. Content hashing, deduplication, data resilience/permanence, and P2P content downloads/uploads are all excellent features, and IPNS is a layer on top that gives the system a more human interface. However to me this feature set makes IPFS sounds like a supercharged CDN, rather than a new kind of Internet. If we're going to set up a lunar base, or start a civilisation on Mars, is IPFS actually going to make connecting them to the Internet easier? (Assuming connecting the networks of the Moon, Mars and Earth is something we want to do.) Is it going to improve our/their experience of the Internet? How well does IPFS actually solve (or help solve) the problems of connecting and maintaining an Internet distributed across huge amounts of open space?

There are numerous examples of companies such as Hotels.com that tried to trademark their domain name, and were unsuccessful. Why is Meetup.com allowed to have ownership rights of a very common English word that simply describes the service they provide? According to Meetup.com's trademark guidelines, 'The word "Meetup" and the other Meetup Marks, such as our Logos, designs, slogans and names are registered trademarks or trademarks of Meetup, Inc. in the U.S. and/or other countries.' IANAL, but to me, this seems highly anti-competitive because it suggests they could sue anyone who uses the word "meetup" to describe a... meetup.
