Did it ever reach the hype it was purported to be ? [1] Gartner estimates $1.9 trillion in value-add by 2020. [2] Cisco estimates a value somewhere between $14 trillion and $19 trillion. [3] IDC estimates a value around $8.9 trillion (source: a16z research staff). 1. https://ift.tt/1nD4M3r 2. https://ift.tt/1jPfDSq https://ift.tt/XTnh57 3. https://ift.tt/2GrQzI5

I'm looking at different investor profiles, and I'm curious if anyone in the HN community has worked with strategic investors. If you have, can you share what the experience was like (what was the strategy, how did it play out)?

In September I released a small book about programming and security. Like most technical authors, I did it for the experience and professional credential more than the money. Now I've sold around 300 copies in the first few months, nearly paying off my $2K advance. I'd like to write more - a lot more - so I'm trying to judge how successful the book is in terms of securing myself more writing opportunities. I've been offered the chance to pitch / write more by the publisher, and the publisher overall seems really happy with my output, but it would be an enormous help to understand what people in the industry / acquisitions editors / etc, use as their criteria for success in technical publishing.

There's a company that promises startups to find them people who express interest some topic or product and fit some firmographic or demographic criteria. They sell these sales leads at $50-100 each with contracts starting at $10,000 minimum. I discovered that they're acquiring these leads in a very different way than they represent to their customers. Rather than finding people who will opt-in to hearing from the startup (in exchange for some content), they acquire/create/search a list of non-opted-in contacts and then cold call them just to verify their info. Once the info is verified, they pass that lead to the startup. Essentially they're taking contact information--which could be bought for $1-2--making a cold call to verify basic info, then selling that contact information to the startup for $50-100 and letting them believe that the person submitted their own information and wants to hear from the startup. They don't tell the startup how they're really acquiring the leads. I only found out after many demands for evidence (and finally getting phone recordings of the cold calls) and following up with the leads myself to ask them what happened. Three of my clients have already been misled by this company, until I directed them to end the contract. My concern is there are many other startups being scammed like this. How can I help them avoid or escape this scam without putting myself in legal jeopardy?

I've been working on a project of mine. I even have a small number of users that care about the product. Yet from time to time I fall into the feeling that everything I'm doing is worthless, extreme self-doubt and feeling that while others are moving ahead with their lives I'm just stuck and useless. It usually lasts 1-3 days making me unable to be productive. It used to be worse and last week(s). What I learned is to remember how these lows feel. Nowadays I know that "It's just another one of those, it shall pass". I also try to get very analytical when it hits and find out why do I feel like that. I have a few questions. (1) Is this normal? If I take a look at, let's say famous, entrepreneurs on Twitter, for example, most of them seem to know what to do and seem to be very pragmatic. Whereas I just often feel completely lost and I feel like I'm throwing my life away and not being good enough. But the things is I love this! I love the whole process of creating new things and figuring them out. I can't imagine myself doing anything else. It's just these lows that I don't know how to handle. (2) If you experience similar feelings do you have any tips on how to handle them?
