[Ask] Having hard time finding a good alternative to gitbook.com

Having hard time finding a good alternative to gitbook.com. I'm looking for a really modern hosted service like Gitbook.com. Gitbook s support doesn't seem to respond at all. There is no way to call them, so I'm looking for something else. I know there is gatsbyjs.com, hexo.com and others that allow us to build one, but I'm looking for plug-and-play service where I write docs in markdown/html and setup the CNAME of my company's domain and be done with it. Any suggestions would be really helpful!

We work at a small company in south San Jose. I personally live in SF, along with 4 of the 5 other non-owners, the fifth being even farther north. The three owners live in the Belmont/San Carlos/Palo Alto area (halfway of the 1 hour drive to the SJ office on a good day). The job is engaging, meaningful, and the company is successful. Yet all of the non-owners, including myself, constantly gripe about the commute times (101 can be awful). The commute into the office can ruin your day. You could be excited for the day's itinerary, have a bad travel experience, and arrive with little to no motivation. You consciously know your productivity is diminished. You dread the drive (or public transit) home. Your negativity, even if you try to hide it, is evident and contagious. Your bosses sympathize so much as to allow you to work in accordance with off-rush hours (arrive 10/11am leave 6/7pm), but this just hurts your ability to socialize normally during the week. They try to compromise with work-from-home Fridays, which 50% of the time become a rescinded privilege due to the necessity of face-to-face interactions. The team comes together and suggests a move to a "middle ground" that does not impact the owners' commute time but drastically reduces the totality of employee commute times. The owners are hesitant because they believe that proximity to clients (SV proper) is crucial in terms of business development and contract procurement, despite nearly all interactions being made over phone and email. HN community, we implore you, what hard evidence can we provide to business owners that the success of their business is directly related to the happiness of their employees? What arguments can we make to convince the owners that their business does not rely on an office in the same general zip code as their perspective employees?

Using a throw-away because it is career suicide to express these thoughts so candidly. This post might trigger people with different views on work than mine. I'm an average developer. I can write decent, legible code, with tests, and solve a business problem according to specs. I didn't study CS and learned it all out of sheer curiosity and passion. I have about five years of experience, all at web startups. So far, so good. But here is the thing: I only like to stay for a year or less at a given place and then quit (or get laid off, even better because I get employment insurance). I go on a 1-6 months break to recharge before I have to look for work again. I'm perfectly fine staying an average developer. I want to do my 40 hours a week, sit out of office politics, go home, and do things I enjoy more with the rest of my time. I have no interest in becoming a lead or a senior dev: the extra stress isn't worth it, the Kool-Aid doesn't taste good, and I'm paid well enough as it is. It feels like I'm living a lie though because hiring managers would much rather get docile, "hungry", "passionate" people who aren't going to leave after 9-12 months. So I have to pretend while interviewing so I can get my next job and pay my bills until it's time for me to take a break again. I don't enjoy doing this because it feels dirty. So this time around, I'm looking at alternatives: how can I work on my own terms and take long breaks in-between while staying employable? Should I look for agencies and only go for 3-6-9 months contracts? Should I give up tech entirely to avoid the broken interview process and avoid burning out at work? I can't believe I'm the only one thinking this way, I know there are plenty of so-called "clock punchers/pragmatists"[0] who refuse to play the game. So I'm asking you: how do you pull it off? How do you survive? What do you tell your managers and your interviewers? [0]: https://ift.tt/2MdCvEG

Hi HN, do any of you know of particularly good, pragmatic, resources for building better (web) software interfaces, particularly along the lines of: 1) Decreasing complexity. 2) Increasing real ease of use. 3) Increasing optionality (Features will be added in the future, perhaps many of them. How does one design an interface that can adapt to future requirements?). 4) Long-lasting, not chasing design trends. Any input as to what makes an interface wonderful for you to use? Any favorites? Thanks in advance! :-)

I tried to notify aruba.it of someone obviously hosting malicious code and trying to attack web servers: http://80.211.112.150/k (Reverse DNS resolves to their domain) Their reaction? 1. in the chat they redirect me to dedicated hosting support form („only way to do it“) 2. Dedicated hosting support just closes my ticket. Wow!

There is a question in the application which talks about the progress you have made. What do you guys think is the best way to approach this? Where I am confused is that the two major things almost all of us have worked on is 1/ Users and 2/ Product. When they are talking about progess, is it the work done/efforts put in, or the numbers/achievements? Or something else? Any thoughts on how to best answer this would be really useful for all the applicants here.

When they are talking about progess, is it the work done/efforts put in, or the numbers/achievements? Or something else? Any thoughts on how to best answer this would be really useful for all the applicants here.

Because as strange as it sounds, the generous permissions they often ask for and the fact they can modify all the pages you're viewing mean that they'd theoretically be a great vector for man in the middle attacks, and bring back the exact problems https supposedly solved. They also seem like a great way to manipulate audiences with 'fake news' or 'misinformation'. Imagine a fake version of adblock that replaced news site content with propaganda or what not. That could be far worse than anything any 'Russian trolls' ever could do, and could even let an adversary manipulate a group into thinking the world is against them (since their posts about such content would appear as gibberish to everything else, and get them banned from social media sites). Just feels like there are a ton of sneaky things that could be done here, and that the way Google and co are handling these things could be extremely dangerous in the long run.

I love the startup pace and the possibilities of the early days, however I want to work on my own projects and ideas. Does one excludes the other? How would you feel if I, as an applicant to your startup, tell you that I want to work with you but just for a couple of months (max. 4 months)?

A website to read and share contents related to startup ecosystem

What about a website where people can submit and read contents related to startup ecosystem. I just came up with an idea, a website where anybody can share contents related to startup and entrepreneurial circle. And people can mark those content as HELPFUL. You know as a person if you are attached with the world of startup, business and entrepreneurship you like to read content that are related to your domain. Also many people read various blogs, websites or watch various videos which may not be possible for other person as an individual to go through. It is very much possible that we generally miss out some grate piece of content everyday. Therefore what about an idea of centralised website where other users can submit links of the articles or videos they found interesting and worth sharing. Maybe a blog or video shared by some other person could help you in some way. It's all about knowledge sharing. Here we help other users by sharing valuable piece of information, that they could not find themselves ever. What you guys think about this concept, please share our reviews with me. Thank you,

I am toying with the idea of building a house, as autonomously as possible. I am thinking about a massive, concrete house. with basement, ground floor and upper floor. Has somebody here experience in this area? Any useful pointers?

Who is using VB.NET? What are they using it for?

At the time Microsoft announced the .NET platform, I made my living as a VB6 and ASP/IIS developer. I put a small amount of energy into looking at VB.NET, but it was VB in name alone. Ultimately this was the push I needed to switch to the F/OSS team and I became a Ruby developer just in time for Rails to come out. I was - and am - very happy about this change. Over the past few years, I've spent time working in Unity, which means I've accidentally become quite proficient in C#. And you know, I don't love it but it's not so bad once you're moving. However, at no point did I ever consider going back to VB.NET. If you'd asked me before a few weeks ago, I honestly believed that it had been consigned to the annals of nerd trivia. It came as a huge shock to see that VB.NET is apparently more popular than C#, which seems to be used for all manner of things: https://ift.tt/2mbLj0F https://ift.tt/2pFyVDK One survey and I'd assume that TIOBE was being trolled. But this seems real. However, I'm experiencing massive cognitive dissonance because I've never met a VB.NET developer, and while I've worked in web, mobile and game development circles for 25 years, I literally have no idea what you'd even use VB.NET for . I've never seen a single article or mention on Hacker News or any of the other forums I read. Is there a sort of progressive/conservative-esque perception bubble where there's a parallel universe using VB.NET for building the next Hooli? It's really bothering me. :)

How do you manage your (personal) documents? If you do it digitally: Do you use special software? A proper DMS? Do you do OCR? Do you index the contents? Do you tag and categorize the documents? Automatically? Do you keep them on your computer? On your NAS? Home Server? What kind of documents do you actually keep? Do you also scan those that you'll still need as an original? How do you scan? Thanks

Tell HN: Braintree is no longer startup-friendly

About 3 years ago, after researching payment processing options, we chose Braintree. The thing is, they were still riding on the goodwill they had built up thus far pre-paypal purchase. Paypal is a total nightmare for some people (especially if you plan on growing fast), so the fact that they were recently purchased by them, should have been a red flag, but customers and reviews still seemed positive. One of the selling points with Braintree was always that once you are underwritten, they are going to work and grow with you. Unlike Paypal, who will arbitrarily freeze your funds at the most inopportune moment. Apparently, Paypal has now applied this same policy at Braintree. One of the features we offer our customers is allowing them to sell event tickets through our software. They can use their own merchant account, but we encourage them to use our in house system (braintree marketplace) because it is usually faster and easier. And so it worked fine for 3 years, slowly growing, processing more and more payments through more and more sub-merchants. Hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then they just decided to shut down 2 of our newest customers and hold 100% of their funds ransom for 180 days. More than $50k for a single customer which is a terrible burden. Reasons given was that we had a sudden increase in marketplace sales from this new customer and they don't want the exposure (even though we processed even more than this from a single sub-merchant last year in a short period of time). So just wanted to put it out there that Braintree is now up to the old tricks of Paypal. Lull you in to a false sense of security, then lock up your funds suddenly for whatever reason with no recourse. If you currently use Braintree, be careful, even with a good growth history on file with them, they are no longer startup friendly as they can't seem to handle spikes in activity or at least have no desire to do so.
