It's probably the fifth time this week that I've gotten the message in gmail: "Unusual Usage - Account Temporarily Locked Down" "To keep our systems healthy, Google has temporarily disabled your account. This primarily occurs when we detect unusually high levels of activity on your account. In most cases, it should take one hour to regain access. In rare cases, it can take up to 24 hours for access to be reinstated." This is not just annoying, it's disruptive and catastrophic for someone like me, who, runs my business through email. Which, unsuspiciously, involves sending maybe a dozen or so emails a day through gmail. And nothing more. It's been a few hours now, and there's never any knowing when I'll get my account back. How is this acceptable? I can't possibly move away from gmail, all my consulting gigs use google for work, i've disseminated my gmail address too far across the web.. But, this happens over and over, and I've begun to feel really helpless. Are there any people at Google that can be contacted about something like this? Or this machine is really running itself and there's nothing that can be done?

I've got a weird profile. I'm a Ph.D. data scientist who has worked at a FANG. But for unusual reasons, I've got plenty of management experience, perhaps to the degree as if I had worked as a project manager or management consultant during all my tenure in the industry. As a result, it's possible my profile could be present as a golden genius unicorn. It's equally possible it could present like poser trash. So how do I write up a resume I can use to apply to employers? Currently, I'm not even sure how to write up a resume for a management role in tech, much less perform the gymnastics to craft my data scientist profile into a resume for management. I uninstalled all Google's apps from my iPhone and reinstalled them. Even after re-installation, Google Maps still knows the Google account you previously signed into. How do they persist identity on your device? Doesn't iOS remove data when you delete the app? How can you force-remove the sticky identity whether or not an app allows you to?

My company has around 1000 CS reps and 200 engineers. The CS reps very often need to ask the engineers questions, report bugs heard about from customers, etc. Us engineers also get bug reports about the internal tools we've developed for CS. Currently, all this is handled via a simple Slack channel. This is actually great, since there's no bureaucratic cost to getting in touch, unlike with a proper ticketing system, and having actual public conversations is the fastest way to resolve issues. But of course, we started seeing inefficiencies in other aspects. The same questions keep being asked over and over again. There's an FAQ linked in the channel topic and it's automatically posted in the channel every 12 hours, but it's still not enough, we still get tons of questions that could be self-solved without engineers' intervention. So, that made me curious, how are other companies handling this? My company has around 1000 CS reps and 200 engineers. The CS reps very often need to ask the engineers questions, report bugs heard about from customers, etc. Us engineers also get bug reports about the internal tools we've developed for CS. Currently, all this is handled via a simple Slack channel. This is actually great, since there's no bureaucratic cost to getting in touch, unlike with a proper ticketing system, and having actual public conversations is the fastest way to resolve issues. But of course, we started seeing inefficiencies in other aspects. The same questions keep being asked over and over again. There's an FAQ linked in the channel topic and it's automatically posted in the channel every 12 hours, but it's still not enough, we still get tons of questions that could be self-solved without engineers' intervention. I just received a ~$1Million offer to purchase the IP of my tech company. My company is a Delaware C-Corp operating in California. The acquiring company is in Nevada and I'd relocate immediately so I can work as a part time consultant. I am currently a CA resident and it seems unlikely that I could avoid paying CA income taxes on the proceeds just by getting a Nevada drivers license and renting an apartment prior to signing the agreement. But given the acquiring company is in NV and I do intend to move maybe it is a legitimate reason to not pay California income taxes. Any thoughts or general advice ? But given the acquiring company is in NV and I do intend to move maybe it is a legitimate reason to not pay California income taxes. Any thoughts or general advice ? I don't have an accountant so any Bay Area CPA referrals are appreciated.

Looking for feedback for resources and ideas on how to ease my son into coding. He loves Minecraft and has done hour of code. Now he's excited to build his own website. Any kid friendly options out there that cater to this? I was thinking of setting up a Node server with hot reload so he can make changes and instantly see them while we go over some of the basics of HTML as a starting point, create a few pages and link them to each other. Having an immediate feedback loop will be important.

I work for a company that's been looking at moving to a service mesh style architecture. They run a few dozen micro-services which are currently Dockerized and deployed on an ECS cluster. We are considering moving to Kubernetes, as ECS has a lot of limitations in the deployment/resiliency area that come more or less standard with Kube. As part of this move we are looking at using a service mesh to enable easier cross region routing on AWS and more dynamic load on various clusters. We were looking into Linkerd as a possible solution, but just noticed that Consul latest release has a service mesh feature now. So for those who've run a service mesh before, what sort of things should I be considering as we evaluate our options? Pros/Cons of specific tools, or service mesh in general are welcome.

Hi everyone, I work at a university institute of computational biology. Besides doing research, we also teach quite a few courses for biology students, many of which include an introduction to programming (mostly with R, but also Python). We have a long-standing debate as to what the best approach to this is, and I would like to hear some of your opinions on the matter. Basically, we have two factions: the "tools-first" and the "fundamentals-first" approach. The supporters of "tools-first" argue that we are teaching biologists, not software developers. They like to teach the specific tools (languages, libraries, functions, etc.) that our students are actually going to need as quickly as possible. To cover as much ground as possible, they are willing to sacrifice a deeper understanding of programming. The "fundamentals-first" faction would prefer to do it the other way around: instead of teaching a load of commands to learn by heart, they would rather take more time to develop a programming mindset. They are willing to sacrifice how much content course participants learn, if it means that they learn how to program properly and fully understand how a given language works (with its variables, functions, scoping, etc.). Their argument is that once you have understood the concept, teaching yourself the content is easy (GIYF); whereas the reverse is much harder. What do you think? I would be especially interested in the opinions of other computational biologists ;-)

I was emailed yesterday by someone out of the blue claiming to be a security researcher who 'found' a security flaw in our SaaS app. I was highly skeptical, and asked for details on the severity of the bug, plus any past references and work history regarding his bug bounty work, but he refused to give me much information until after I agreed to pay him a minimum $250 bounty. I refused to do so, but then I noticed on our 'God mode' dashboard that he created an account on our SaaS and then tried to upload an image with a malicious header as his avatar. Our system detected this, logged it an warned us, and stopped the activity. Our hunter then simply logged off and disappeared, and we terminated his account in the system. Just curious as to how other DevOps or developers out there deal with unsolicited bounty hunters like this? What is the best way to ascertain if their request is legitimate or not? How do you handle the 'chicken and egg' situation of agreeing to payment just in case they have found a valid security hole?

I am active and known in a certain small industry in my home country ("developing world" kinda place) after 15+ years of online presence. Over the past years I've been feeling constrained and unhappy with that identity. I also felt very alien in my home country and culture, both afk and online. Even my mother tongue and given name are not something I like. They all associate with the world I don't enjoy nor support. While I'm obviously not a native English speaker, I feel more "at home" while communicating in and consuming English and living in the Western society. I moved to a western country, but online I was still "there". Now I want to ditch my established identity and start afresh, under a new name. Distance myself from the culture I grew up in. Of course, I could do all that without changing my name, but I feel like the old world would leak and haunt me. Recently I came across the "ex Muslim" subreddit, and felt a weird familiarity. My troubles are nothing compared to those who grew up in a religious world and found the courage to leave and be vocal about it. But I could relate in a way. They feel like "the old life" is constantly trying to leak in and poke them. It worries me, and I thought maybe we could discuss this type of cyber-rebirth, its caveats. Maybe someone has relevant experience and wouldn't mind sharing. - How do you make sure the old identity doesn't leak into the new one? (apart from obvious technical non-contamination policy) - Feels like starting from scratch in 2018 is harder than it was 15 years ago. Maybe it's the other way around. I guess I'm getting cold feet. - I want to write and create, but I'm worried that being this weird person who magically appeared on the internet just a few months ago would make people wary. Google my new name: the guy never existed before 2018. Where the hell was he? - Will changing full legal name (first and last) bring lots of problems for years to come? - Am I being silly?

The question is simple - probably the answer is not: How do remote workers deal with taxes when working for a foreign company? a) Do you pay taxes in your country or in the company's country? b) Do you pay taxes as freelancer, 'LLC' or as dependent worker? In my country (Portugal) being a freelancer means paying an huge amount of taxes (~50%) when making more than 25K/y. (updated)
