New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Job seekers – How do you track your applications? Ask HN: Job seekers – How do you track your applications?

I've started applying to jobs and I am finding it daunting to track the applications and schedule interviews. For scheduling, I've tried Calendly but that's not working. I often don't get a response when I send a Calendly URL. For tracking, I routinely scan my inbox to keep track of what jobs I had applied for. There has to be a better way of managing this. Are you guys aware of any tools that can help manage this process ? Something like a tuned down CRM ?

Hi, Currently, I'm pursuing a masters in Control systems. After looking for a couple of blogs by researchers and graduate students I've had some trouble understanding in how to document/write the things I'm learning in graduate school. Ideally, I'd like to write to help understand how deep my understanding of the subject is but also be a way to contact people who are interested in the field of control systems & machine learning as two overlapping fields via a personal blog. A few of my concerns involve: 1. How to maintain a technical blog without sounding like an academician i.e examples of other good blogs. 2. How to spread the knowledge from the courses I'm taking legally i.e. how much out of class homeworks/material is it okay to share? Thanks for reading!

I have never been a fan of the regular Apple keyboards, and prefer the old school ones with a lot of tactile feedback. I bought a Matias Quiet Pro which I did like quite a bit but I had to return it after a few months due to dead keys. A few months later the new one also has the same problem. So I need to change plans. For those that use MacOS in a desktop environment, what's your favorite keyboard choice?

Hello HN! I'm at a crossroads in my life with two very different paths and I'm not sure of which to pick. For context, I'm 25/F with a MSME currently in the midwest. I'm in a unique situation and am looking for advice. My current options: 1. Paid PhD ($90k salary + tuition) at a midwest state university. In exchange, I sign a service commitment with the Department of Energy for ~15 years after the PhD is completed. 2. Move to SV and work at an autonomous car company (think Lyft/Uber ATC). $150k salary + ~$100k in RSUs/year The government route is obviously very stable and has a pension, decent benefits, etc. However, the work will trend from technical to managerial (contract management, etc) within less than 3 years of graduating with the PhD. Exciting work is traded for stability + pension. The startup route is almost the polar opposite - not stable but with almost a guarantee of interesting work! Additionally, friends and family (from the midwest) are always talking about the tech bubble in SV and how autonomous car companies could be killed tomorrow by regulation. If the RSUs are valued at $0, then the SV offer is a slight pay cut. Many of my academic friends would kill for a $90k/year fellowship + stable job after graduation; many of my industry friends would love a $250k compensation package. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What route did you take and what information do you know now that would've informed the decision differently? More generally, what advice would you give?

Hi folks, I’m trying to get back into doing side projects for my own learning. However, I have a problem and I’d like to know if I can trade money for a solution. Back when I was in uni or a new grad, I frequently repeatedly had a problems with package managers, setting up test frameworks, figuring out how to use a debugger to get to a point in a test, package managers, other development environment issues, and especially package managers. My response back then was to spend hours yak shaving and going down rabbit holes. As a student, this led to a lot of wasted time. When I got to the workplace, this habit led to me getting some pretty strongly-worded feedback that I needed to get better at asking for help when I ran into these sorts of problems. After a few years, I’ve mostly gotten over the “I’m not a real engineer if I only have a surface-level understanding of npm” feeling. Asking well-framed questions leads to a coworker popping up and unblocking me pretty quickly and the team as a whole moving more efficiently. But what do I do for personal projects? Is there anyone who has a really solid understanding of npm, gems, rvm, protractor, node-debugger, etc. and offers the service where I can book time on their calendar a week from now, send them a clear description of my problem, and videochat with them for 5 minutes to 45 minutes and then pay for 45 minutes of their time? What would rates generally be? Folks with experience doing consulting or services, how would you structure such a transaction? Would it be best to have someone on retainer? Or would they just have themselves up on calendly as described here: https://ift.tt/2JgbXQF ?

9 by canterburry | 7 comments on Hacker News.
Ironically, I am part of said management but I feel like all other hiring managers ,around and above me, don't even know what "excellent" engineering talent looks like. Most of my peers are mainly concerns with deadlines and to meet deadlines they need bodies. Once they get said bodies, they complain about how little people on their teams seem to care, how they don't read the requirements, how they don't bother asking questions when they don't understand etc I don't claim to have cracked the hiring challenge but I do have some guiding principles which seems to work: * The candidate must demonstrate passion, curiosity and personal commitment to their craft. I.e. they take time to learn or practice their skills outside of work projects. They test their code not because the process says to do so but because they themselves have strong motivation to deliver a dependable product. * They are OCD. Not only do they need to know the how, but they need to understand why...and they won't stop until they have figured out the why. This helps in many situations from understanding standards, debugging odd bugs, selecting a good stack. * The next engineer must be better than the last hired engineer. Don't hire unless the candidate is solid even if your team is struggling. Other managers check boxes next to frameworks, acronyms and spend more time telling the candidate about the company than asking questions. How can this be turned around?

The term "We take security seriously" has almost become a joke. Every corporation or company throws it around. Recently on a vulnerability disclosure, a megacorp stated that very line but then proceeded to hide critical details and handle things poorly. What is the sniff test for you when deciding if a company actually does in fact take security seriously? Also, what companies are more progressive and are actively pushing security as a differentiator? I seem to remember a company recently that not only had 3rd party code audits performed but they even disclosed details of what the auditor found. I cannot however recall the name. Thanks

Research environment differs significantly from regular software engineering: - researchers conduct experiments that may fail - they often produce PoC instead of final products - it's tempting to produce tonnes of low quality code (since it just an experiment/PoC!) - often researchers are not software engineers so they don't really care about code quality / tests How to find a good trade-off between high coding standards and not getting in the way of research? Is it possible to move smoothly from PoC to production solution without rewriting everything from scratch? How to share code between experiments / PoCs?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: I built a referral program for developers, would love feedback Ask HN: I built a referral program for developers, would love feedback

Hi everyone, Over the weekend I launched a referral program for my app Pull Reminders ( https://ift.tt/2rVZHxE ). Here's a quick summary with two screenshots showing what it looks like: https://twitter.com/abi/status/1001432164569960451 For some background, Pull Reminders is used by over a thousand developers and has 100+ new developers signing up each week. I've been looking at strategies to reach more potential customers without having to spend money or a ton of time so a referral program seemed like it had potential. There are well-known success stories out there of referral programs designed by consumer products like DropBox, but far fewer for B2B, and almost none that I found which were targeted at developers (DigitalOcean is one). I considered a cash incentive (ie. $25 per converted referral), but developers are well-paid so offering cash seemed like it could actually be a turn off. I considered offering credits, but Pull Reminders is expensed by teams so for an individual on the team this feels like a poor incentive. This eventually led me to the idea of offering free coffee (and tea)–not just regular coffee, but high-end coffee from specialty roasters. It's a generalization but I feel that most developers like coffee, and getting a bag of specialty coffee seems like it could be a fun and novel reward. I have no idea if my approach or design is good so I would love your thoughts and feedback. How can I improve the structure, presentation, or description of my referral program? Is the coffee idea good? Is my copy written well (this was tough – I spent several hours repeatedly tweaking and rewriting)? P.S. Sorry for the long post – I plan on eventually turning my learnings and results into a blog post.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Who's angel investing? Ask HN: Who's angel investing?
16 by shafyy | 8 comments on Hacker News.
I know this is not how it works, but the current status quo to find angel investors is broken. Something someone said in the YC Startup Investor School [0] stuck with me (I'm paraphrasing): "If you're an angel investor and meeting founders, think of it as a job interview for the position of the investor. You're the interviewee. The status quo to find angel investors is over networking. However, I think this is a huge market inefficiency. Continuing the analogy from before, something like Triple Byte for angel investors should exist. Wouldn't it make sense for angel investors to pay $100 or so a month to get super high-quality deals? Wouldn't it make sense for founders to fill out a YC-style application on that platform and get matched with angel investors? (As a founder I can answer my own question, which is, yes, it would). Do you know of any such platform out there that's not scam? As a quicker solution, maybe something analogous to "Ask HN: Who's hiring" might also work? Happy to hear your thoughts... 0: https://ift.tt/2oTtpOL

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Experience with offering monthly subscriptions? Ask HN: Experience with offering monthly subscriptions?
6 by DangerousPie | 5 comments on Hacker News.
I run a mid-sized online community that has about 2 million pageviews a month, through a limited company in the EU. At the moment it is entirely financed through advertisements. This brings in just about enough money to justify running it, but I don't really like this model. Not only are the ads annoying (I even use an Adblocker myself) but I suspect that they are also not very good value for me. In addition, there are of course all the complications introduced by GDPR, which mean I am not even sure anymore if I should continue to use services like AdSense at all. Over the last few months and years I have been thinking more and more about introducing some sort of subscription feature, where members could pay a small monthly fee to become an official "supporter" of the site. This would then hide all ads, give them a little badge on their profile and maybe access to some bonus features in the future. However, I have been shying away from doing this so far, mostly because the tax implications sound very complicated. If I understand the rules correctly, I would have to charge each user VAT based on their home country and then report the VAT I have collected to each home country every month. And to do this, I might even have to register with the tax authorities in every country?! However, it seems like Stripe may have something to help with this [0] although that may be more US-focused. Has anybody here tried doing something like this? How complicated is this in practice? Or can anybody recommend a service that takes care of these issues for you? And what has the reaction from your users been like? I also recently came across Funding Choices from Google, which may do something like this with their Contributor feature [1]. Has anybody implemented this successfully? --- [0] https://ift.tt/2se7d4j [1] https://ift.tt/2GWWS1m

In goland, usage of frameworks for web dev is discouraged. The favored way seemsu to be to take the modules from the Go Standard Library and create your own webserver. I would like to know which is the best resource to have an comprehensive understanding of web app development using Go. I have often used django for my previous projects. Django has some decent defaults in terms of handling security. So not having the safety net of a framework sometimes gives me the jitters. How to handle security in Golang applications? Are there some established best practices or is it to be implemented by the developer?

I've noticed quite an increase in non-commercial project developer communities that use Slack as their primary medium of communication, particularly for help and developer-related inquiries. My gut reaction to this is a negative one, where I feel like the siloing of developer releated questions and answers is against the nature of the web, and more importantly detremental to the community itself, as it prevents discovery of previous discussions in forums, Google Groups, Stackoverflow etc. How do you feel about these?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: When is federation a better solution than decentralization? Ask HN: When is federation a better solution than decentralization?

The past couple years have been dominated by the hype cycle of cryptocurrencies as an incentive mechanism for decentralization. Hundreds of “N sided marketplace” problems have been reframed to fit within decentralized solutions. And yet, none of them have really succeeded. There is no “killer app” representing the decentralized marketplace du-jour. I can’t help but wonder if many of these projects are approaching the solution the wrong way. The fundamental problem underpinning decentralization is one of governance and direction. Too many cooks in the kitchen means solutions can become diluted with unnecessarily indirect incentive mechanisms. Decentralization is a spectrum. There is a middle ground between a decentralized solution and a centralized solution. That middle ground is federation. To me, federation has always seemed a better solution for decentralized marketplaces than full decentralization, because it decouples economic incentives from those of technology suppliers. As long as we live in a world where fiat currency and nation states dominate transactional and regulatory environments, it is unavoidable that any large enterprise pursuing legitimacy will need to interact within the bounds of laws and regulations. Given that, it seems that federation offers a better solution than decentralization because it allows service operators to define their own economic processes according to their own jurisdictions and regulations, whereas decentralization is more of a free-for-all that can meet only the lowest common denominator of regulatory and economic restrictions. What does HN think? Is decentralization overhyped? Would many projects be better suited to a hybrid model of decentralized infrastructure and federated transactions?
